The first unusual thing that happened was that Father Pestle offered Mike a glass of wine. Mike thought it especially odd that a priest, no less, would offer alcohol to a seventeen year-old, but this was Germany, and there was no drinking age. Plus, it made Mike feel respected, an equal to the G.I.'s, so he took the offer, though he did not like the taste of wine.

Father Pestle told the group to get started with the first song. He needed to clean up a couple of things in the back room. As Pestle disappeared into the bedroom, Mike and the others got out their guitars. Danley handed Mike a song booklet, folded open to the first song, "Jesus Can Lend A Hand". It was typical of the folk mass repertoire, a few simple chords, and vague folk-like lyrics:
