Ted Headman's Christmas



Chapter Four: The Beating

wre.gifMr. Headman glared contemptuously at his son. "It is unfortunate that you said that to me. Because now you must die. Die like a dog in hell!"

Mr. Headman took a swing at Ted, a swing so wild that even Ted, in his weakened condition, was able to sidestep it. However, in avoiding his father’s fist, he tripped over a vomit-encrusted table and fell into a large pile of wet, stinking trash.

Seeing his son momentarily helpless, Mr. Headman quickly retrieved his sturdy oak staff from the hall closet and rushed back into Ted’s room. With the zealousness of John Brown at Harpers Ferry, Mr. Headman set about the task before him.

Crack!

"If I thought this would really do any good, I’d beat you until sundown!" bellowed Mr. Headman. "As it is, I’ll just beat you!"

Crack! Crack!

"Now what do you have to say for yourself?!" he demanded.

Ted lifted his battered head from the garbage pile, looked his father more or less squarely in the eye, and responded in the only way he knew how.

"Eat me."
