In fact, the idea worked very well. Like most American children, particulary teenagers, Mike was numbed by living in a country with a foreign language, no 7-11's, and no Monday night football. So, free of the usual distractions, he became thoroughly immersed in Boy Scouts, and his schoolwork. His junior year at Frankfurt American High School was, so far, a 4.0 success. Best of all, he started going to Mass.

And so it was that Mike Young stood near the front of the church that day, watching Danley play and sing "Here Comes The Sun". Mike watched with that peculiar intense expression used by budding rock stars when they want some one to ask, "Do you play the guitar?". Sure enough, after Danley finished the song, he looked at Mike, handed him the guitar, a big flat-top Guild, and said

"Here, play something." Faced with the large instrument thrust in his face like that, he could do nothing but take it in his hands and strum the chords to the only "rock" song he really knew: "Where Do The Children Play?", by Cat Stevens. He missed the chord changes a couple of times, but it must have been a fairly good rendition because the next words he heard were from Father Pestle, suddenly behind him.

"Not bad, son. Would you like to play in church?" Mike looked around at the friendly gaze of the fifty-ish priest and replied, "Oh sure, I wouldn't mind playing at folk mass." Father Pestle reached out, grabbed Michael's hand and, pumping it eagerly, said, "Fine, fine. We're having a little rehearsal at my apartment Tuesday night. Why don't you join us?"
