During the next few days, Mike practiced and practiced, learning everything he needed to know in order to play guitar at folk mass (i.e. the G, C, and Em chords). For good measure he also figured out a couple of songs in order to impress Corporal Danley. These were the old standby "House of Rising Sun" and John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." (Though this latter could not be played in front of Father Pestle because of its use of four letter words.)

His parents were very pleased that he was going to be an active contributor to the church, not just another child dragged along unwillingly to a boring, pointless, ritual. Thus, his mother eagerly drove him to the priest's apartment that night.

Like other bachelor officers, Father Pestle lived in a drab but adequate military apartment complex in downtown Frankfurt. Mrs. Young dropped Mike off at the front door of the building at 7:00, promising to return at 10:00 to retrieve him. He took the stairs up one flight to apartment 203 and knocked on the door. It was opended by Father Pestle, who was dressed casually in old khaki slacks, a college T-shirt ("Fordham University") and sandals. Mike

walked into the apartment. He nodded hello to Corporal Danley, who introduced him to another G.I., Specialist First Class Bruce DuBois. He look remarkably like Danley, same thin body, blond hair, tasteful mustache, almost pretty. Mike figured the two of them must have had their pick of girlfriends, either German, or certainly among the American teenagers.
